Dr. Andrew Carver is a clinical podiatrist and medical researcher who has served as an oral examiner for the California Podiatric Medical Board, the chief of podiatry for Kaiser Santa Clara, and the team podiatrist for Oakland's Golden State Warriors. Working in conjunction with Dr. Lowell Scott Weil, Sr., Dr. Andrew Carver also co-invented the Weil-Carver Hammertoe Implant.
The Weil-Carver Hammertoe Implant is a patented device that is used in a variety of small bone and joint procedures. This surgical absorbable fixation apparatus was developed by Warsaw, Indiana's Biomet Corporation for use in proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis, which requires protection and/or immobilization.
After it is implanted in the foot, the Weil-Carver Hammertoe Implant requires no external hardware that might be cumbersome to the patient. The 2.5 mm and 2.0 mm versions of the device feature partial threading that increases stability and partial barbs that prevent pistoning. The implant is also available as a 2.3 mm double-barbed model. Unlike traditional immobilization modalities that install hardware through a patient's skin, the Weil-Carver Hammertoe Implant eliminates all risk of pin track infection.
